What makes the attic drive more of this than the bathrooms do?

The attic deserves its own paragraph, because on an old house it is the largest single space nobody visits and it drives more of this than the bathrooms do.

Poor ventilation traps humid air under the roof deck. Add a small roof leak, which on a barrel tile roof that has been repaired across several generations is not exotic, and you get sustained damp in a dark, undisturbed space. Insulation damaged by moisture then gives silverfish shelter and stable dampness in the same material. Wet insulation is the clearest signal available: it mats down, loses its R value, and becomes something to live in. An attic that feels heavy and warm rather than simply hot is telling you the ventilation is the first thing to look at.

What sits in a 1920s house’s closets and attic is different from what sits in a house built in 2005, and the difference is not sentiment. It is volume and vintage. Then thin the pile. Not every inherited box needs to survive a fourth decade, and the fastest reduction available in an old house is usually deciding that some of it does not. Whatever stays gets sealed and gets a spot with air around it. Vacuuming the closets and storage areas afterward removes the crumbs, dust, shed skins, and droppings that undisturbed clutter accumulates.

Two things do not belong in this sequence. Repeated sightings mean more than a stray insect. Silverfish reproduce steadily, so a few in one damp room usually point at a larger population sheltering nearby, and in a 1920s house that nearby is generally a void, a closet, or a stack of boxes rather than the room where the sighting happened.

Season Changes the Assembly, Not the Boxes
