Silverfish are usually diagnosed as an indoor moisture reading. Somewhere in the house is holding humidity, and the search runs through bathrooms, closets, attics, and whatever was stored in cardboard. In the older New Tampa villages that search regularly comes back empty, and households conclude the insects are arbitrary. They are not. The moisture is real and it is on the wrong side of the drywall. As the main New Tampa page records, Tampa Palms broke ground in the 1980s and most of the surrounding villages followed through the 1990s, and these are homes at the age where original construction quietly opens up: expansion joints widen and weep screeds clog with decades of mulch buildup. That last detail is the mechanism rather than a landscaping footnote, and silverfish control on these properties starts outside at the bottom of a wall.

A Stucco Wall Is Supposed to Drain

The thing to understand first is that a stucco assembly is not built to keep water out of itself. It is built to let water out of itself, which is a different design intent and it has one dependency.

Water gets into a wall assembly. It does that on every kind of cladding, and Florida supplies more opportunity than most: driving rain against an elevation, a storm with wind behind it, humidity working through the assembly, irrigation throwing spray onto a wall in the same arc every morning. The assembly is designed on the assumption that some of that arrives behind the finish.

What the design does about it is send it down and out. There is a drainage plane behind the cladding, water reaching it runs down that plane by gravity, and at the bottom of the wall a screed detail lets the water leave at the base. Small openings, an exit path, and clear space below it. That is the entire arrangement, and it works quietly for as long as the exit stays open.

The one thing the arrangement depends on

The exit has to be above the ground, and it has to be clear.

That is the whole dependency, and it is unusual among building details in that it is not maintained by the building. It is maintained by landscaping decisions made by a series of homeowners and lawn crews over thirty years, none of whom were thinking about drainage. Nobody is at fault in that sequence. A person topping up a mulch bed is doing the correct thing for the bed. The accumulation is a side effect of ordinary care, repeated on a timescale long enough that nobody notices the total.

Thirty Years of Beds Rise an Inch at a Time

The buildup is invisible because of its rate, and the rate is why this belongs to these villages specifically rather than to New Tampa generally.

Consider a planting bed over three decades of normal maintenance. Fresh mulch goes down every year or two, because that is what keeps a bed looking the way the village expects. The previous layer does not vanish. Organic mulch breaks down into something closer to soil and stays put, so each application adds to a base rather than replacing one. Irrigation and rain wash fines into the bed, roots and settled soil raise the grade, and edging installed to hold it all in place keeps the accumulated depth from spreading away.

Run that for thirty years and the ground beside the wall is meaningfully higher than when the house was finished. A house built in 1991 has been through fifteen or twenty rounds of that cycle. A house built in 2019 has been through two, which is why this is a Tampa Palms and Hunter’s Green problem rather than a new construction problem.

The plantings compound it from above. Mature shrubs grown against the wall hold moisture in the material below them, block the sun that would dry it out, and make the base of the wall difficult to see at all.

Drainage Inward Is Not the Same as Humidity Indoors

Now put the two halves together, because the consequence is specific rather than general.

When the exit at the base of the wall is buried, water reaching the drainage plane runs down and arrives at a bottom that no longer opens outward. It does not stop being water. It stays in the assembly, in contact with material that is itself damp, since buried mulch and soil hold moisture rather than shedding it. The wall goes from a system that drains after a rain to a system that holds after a rain.

That raises the moisture content in the wall cavity as a standing condition rather than an event. Not a leak with a stain and a date, which is a different problem with a different fix. A persistently elevated moisture level between the outside of the drywall and the back of the cladding, running along whichever elevation the buildup affects.

Here is the part that trips up households and plenty of inspections along with them. That cavity is not connected to the air you are measuring. A hygrometer on a hall table reads room air. The wall void is a separate volume, sealed from the room by drywall and paint, conditioned and ventilated by nothing, and it can run considerably damper than the room for years without the house ever feeling humid. So the readings are accurate and the conclusion drawn from them is wrong. The building is not dry. The part you can measure is dry.

Why the usual advice underperforms here

Every recommendation on a standard silverfish list is aimed at room air, which is why running the list produces so little on these properties. A dehumidifier conditions a room. Opening interior doors circulates air between rooms. An exhaust fan removes moisture generated in a room. Each is genuinely useful when the moisture is in the room, and none reaches the inside of a wall cavity, because there is no air path from one to the other. Getting paper and fabric out of cardboard sits in the same position: worth doing on any property, and no change to the condition of the wall. A household that does all of it and sees no result concludes the problem is unsolvable rather than concluding it is located somewhere else.

Enough Silverfish Biology to Explain the Fit

The insect side of this is short, because the wall is the interesting part.

Silverfish need moisture and favor still air, which is why they turn up in the damp unventilated parts of a house rather than the parts people occupy. They eat starch, which puts paper, book bindings, wallpaper paste, cardboard, and some fabrics on the menu and leaves structural wood off it. They shelter in cracks and narrow seams by day and move at night, so almost nobody finds the insect first. They do not bite people or pets and are not known to spread disease.

Read those requirements against a damp wall cavity and the fit is close to exact. Persistent moisture, no air movement, permanent darkness, and a continuous network of narrow spaces along framing and behind drywall. It is better habitat than a bathroom, because a bathroom dries out between showers and a cavity that cannot drain does not dry out at all. The Sightings Sort by Elevation Rather Than by Room

This is the diagnostic that makes the mechanism visible from indoors, and it is why it is worth asking which wall rather than which room.

A room air problem produces a pattern organized around humidity generation and stillness. The guest bathroom, the closet with the door always shut, the laundry, the spare room nobody enters. Those locations scatter through a floor plan with nothing geographic in common.

A wall problem produces a pattern organized around geography. The baseboard on one exterior elevation, the closet built into that same elevation, the floor line behind a bookcase pushed against it, and the garage wall continuing the same run of stucco. Map those and they line up along one or two sides of the house rather than scattering. When the map lines up like that, the next move is outside.

What the base of the wall looks like when you actually read it

The signs are ordinary, visible from a crouch, and easy to check on a Saturday.

Mulch or soil sitting directly against the stucco with no visible gap and no screed detail showing along the run. Bed material several inches higher than the surrounding turf. Staining or a persistent dark band low on the wall. Mulch that stays dark and packed on that elevation while the same mulch on a sunnier side has dried out. Plantings grown tight enough that the wall is not visible without moving them. Edging holding a raised bed in place right at the foundation line.

The Correction Is Landscaping, and It Is the Durable Half

The useful thing about a mechanism like this is that removing it is a one time job rather than a recurring service.

Pull the accumulated material back and lower the grade in a band along the wall so its base is clear and above the surrounding ground again. That single action restores the exit the assembly was built with, and it stays restored until somebody buries it again. Nothing about it requires a product or a schedule.

The supporting items decide how fast it re buries and how much water the wall is asked to handle. Keep the mulch depth in that band lower than the rest of the bed. Cut shrubs back so sun and air reach the base. Adjust irrigation heads throwing spray directly onto the stucco every morning, since a wall watered daily is asked to drain daily. Check that downspouts discharge away from the wall instead of at its foot, and that the last few feet of grade fall away from the house.

Where the buildup is deep, where staining suggests this has been running a long time, or where the screed detail cannot be found at all, the recommendation is to have someone look at the wall itself rather than at the bed. That is a builder or a stucco contractor rather than a pest company.

What Treatment Covers That Digging Cannot

Correcting the ground restores the condition and does not clear a population, and stating that division keeps anyone from expecting the wrong result from the right job.

An established population is already sheltering in the cavity, in seams along framing, and behind trim. Those individuals do not leave because the wall started draining again, and a wall damp for years takes real time to dry down. Through that interval the population is still foraging into the rooms.

Treatment covers the interval, and its map is the elevation rather than the house. Everything along the affected run gets worked: the base of the wall from inside, the built in closets sharing it, the framing seams the garage exposes on that same stretch, and the roof line above it where the wall carries up into the attic. Placement follows the findings into the harborage itself rather than coating open interior surfaces. Cadence follows the same logic: a tighter interval while a population is worked down and the wall dries, easing to a standing rhythm once the condition is gone. An Inspection That Starts Outside and Works In

The order is the opposite of a normal silverfish walk, and the order is most of the value.

We start at the base of the exterior walls on every elevation: down at the foundation line, reading the grade against the wall, moving plantings where they have closed the view, checking where irrigation lands and where downspouts discharge, and looking for the screed detail rather than assuming it is where it was installed.

The bathrooms and the storage get read too, because a property can genuinely have both mechanisms.

Our humidity reads fine indoors and we still have silverfish. What is that telling us?

That the moisture they are using is not in the room air, which is a reading a household thermostat can never produce. A stucco wall is built to shed water down the back of its cladding and out at the bottom, and when that exit is buried the water stays in the assembly instead. The insects sheltering in that cavity are experiencing a damp cavity, not your living room. It is why the standard advice about running a dehumidifier and moving air between rooms produces so little in these villages. The condition is on the outside of the drywall.

How does mulch end up covering something that was installed to stay clear?

Nobody buries it on purpose. It happens an inch at a time over decades, which is exactly why it turns up on thirty year old properties and rarely on new ones. We treat what we handle and we say plainly what we saw. Usually yes, because what is needed is not a redesign. Pulling material back and lowering the grade in a narrow band right at the wall leaves the bed reading exactly as it did from the street, and most of these communities are concerned with what the front elevation looks like rather than with how deep the mulch sits against the stucco. Where a specific standard is in play it is worth a conversation with the association before the work rather than after. It is a small enough change that it rarely becomes a dispute.
