Ask most Florida households to picture an ant problem and they picture a mound. That image is the reason so much ant advice is about lawns, and it is the wrong starting point for the ant that most often turns up on a Valrico kitchen counter. As the main Valrico page puts it, the ant most kitchens here meet is the ghost ant, and one colony spreads itself across several satellite nests at once.
That structural fact is what ant control in an established suburb has to be built around. It explains the complaint we hear most often on these streets, which is that the trail keeps coming back after every treatment, and it explains why the explanation is not that the household did it wrong.
One Colony, Several Nests at Once
A ghost ant colony is not organized the way people assume an ant colony is organized.
The assumed model is a single nest with a single queen in it, reached by a trail. Under that model, finding the nest is the whole job. It is a reasonable picture and it fits some species.
Ghost ants do not fit it on either count. UF describes their colonies as moderate to large and containing numerous reproducing females, meaning many queens rather than one. And new colonies are probably formed by budding: one or more reproductive females leave an established colony accompanied by workers and some brood, and set up in a new nesting site.
Put those two together and the consequence is direct. Reproduction is distributed rather than concentrated, and the colony disperses itself into additional locations as ordinary behavior. So there is no single point where the whole thing can be reached. A household that finds a nest behind a cabinet and eliminates it has removed one part of something that continues operating from the others, and the counter traffic resumes on the schedule of whatever is still running.
The Routine That Feels Like It Should Work
It goes: see the trail, spray the trail, watch it vanish, conclude it is handled, and find it back within a week or two.
Every step of that is a reasonable inference and the conclusion is still wrong. The spray genuinely killed the workers on the counter. What it did not touch is any of the reproducing females, in any of the nests, because none of them were on the counter. Foraging workers are a small visible fraction of a colony, and removing them costs it very little.
There is a second effect worth knowing about, which is that disturbance and budding interact badly. Since reproductive females leaving with workers is how this species expands, a repellent product applied at a nest area risks producing exactly that response. This is why households sometimes report that after a determined round of spraying in the kitchen, ants show up in a bathroom on the other side of the house.
Where the Other Nests Are in an Established Suburb House
They are in places an ordinary search would never cover, and UF’s list of nesting sites is the reason this species is so hard to chase.
Indoors, UF places ghost ants in wall voids and the spaces between cabinetry and baseboards, in potted plants, and in small spaces such as cracks, the gaps between books, and voids generally. Read that against a real house and the implications are unwelcome. Wall voids are not searchable without opening them. The gap behind a cabinet run is not inspectable from a kitchen. A potted plant is a nest site sitting on a counter or a lanai floor, watered on a schedule, and never once suspected.
Outdoors, the same source lists tufts of dead but temporarily moist grass, plant stems, cavities beneath detritus, under loose bark, and at the bases of palm fronds. A Valrico yard built out through the 1980s and 1990s and maintained since supplies all of those: established beds with a mulch layer, mature trees with bark that has begun to loosen, palms with the frond bases this species specifically uses, and irrigated turf that keeps the grass thatch damp through the dry season.
The indoor and outdoor lists are not alternatives. A colony can hold sites on both sides of the wall at once, with foragers moving between them, which is why treating only inside or only outside produces partial and temporary results.
An Irrigated Lawn Keeps the Outdoor Half in Business
Several items on that nesting list depend on moisture, and irrigation supplies it regardless of the weather.
The nesting sites UF describes outdoors are damp ones: moist grass tufts, cavities under detritus, the sheltered space at a frond base. In a dry spring those conditions would thin out on their own across an unwatered landscape. On a maintained suburban lot they do not, because a system running three times a week keeps the beds and the thatch layer at exactly the humidity the species wants.
None of that argues for letting a lawn die. It does mean an established, well kept, irrigated Valrico lot is more hospitable to this ant than a neglected one, which is why the outdoor half needs treating even when every visible ant is indoors.
Sugar and Water Are Doing the Drawing
The two are worth separating, because households usually address one and not the other.
UF records a preference for sweets in this species, with observations of it feeding on sugar, cakes and syrups, and notes that ghost ants tend honeydew excreting insects. That last detail is the one that changes yard thinking: a plant with an aphid or scale population on it is a food source in its own right, and a shrub against the house can supply a colony without a crumb ever being involved indoors.
Water matters just as much and gets less attention. The trails people find most often run to a bathroom sink, a shower, a dishwasher edge, or a slow drip under a kitchen cabinet, and those are moisture routes rather than food routes. A kitchen can be genuinely spotless and still be the wettest room in the house.
So the useful household work runs in two directions at once. Sweets into sealed containers handles the food half. Fixing the drip under the sink, drying the tray under a potted plant, and running a bathroom fan long enough to matter handles the other. Wiping a trail with soapy water erases the pheromone line the scouts laid and buys back the evening, but the trail is a symptom of a colony that has not changed.
Are These the Same Ants as the Mounds in the Yard?
No, and Valrico properties frequently have both running at once without any connection between them.
Fire ants are the outdoor species everyone already knows: mounds in sunny turf, along walkways, near play equipment, with workers that swarm out and sting repeatedly when a mound is disturbed. Ghost ants are the indoor trailing species. UF puts workers at 1.3 to 1.5 millimeters, all one size, with a deep dark brown head and thorax and a whitish or opaque gaster and legs, which is where the name comes from and why a trail on a light countertop can look like a line of moving specks with the front halves missing.
The third species on many lots here is the bigheaded ant, and the main Valrico page covers its signature. UF describes it leaving piles of loose sandy soil where it digs below the surface, nesting in disturbed soil, lawns and flowerbeds, under bricks and slabs and flower pots, and along the base of structures. It does not sting and causes no structural damage. It does build fragile debris covered foraging tubes sometimes confused with subterranean termite tubes, and that alone is worth an identification. We do not do termite work ourselves and refer it out.
Three species, three different treatments, one property. The identification is the step that decides whether the work does anything.
The Calendar Moves the Pressure, Not the Colony
Ghost ants are less seasonal than the lawn species that share the property.
Fire ant activity has a visible rhythm because the mounds respond to rain. Colonies build up and out after a soaking, so fresh mounds appear across turf in the days after a summer storm, and mating flights follow wet weather too.
The indoor species runs on a flatter line. A colony holding nests in wall voids and cabinet gaps lives in conditioned space that stays in the same narrow temperature band all year, so nothing about January slows it down. Tampa Bay does not deliver a freeze that resets anything anyway.
What does shift is where the pressure comes from. A long dry stretch drives foraging toward interior moisture, so households often notice bathroom and kitchen trails intensify in spring before the rains start. Heavy rain works the other way, pushing outdoor nesting sites toward the structure. Treating a Colony You Cannot Fully Find
The objective is reaching the parts you cannot find, which is different from killing the ants you can see, and it dictates the method.
Bait is the tool that fits the structure of the problem. Foraging workers take it up and carry it back into the nests, which means it travels to locations nobody located, including sites inside voids and outdoors on the same property. UF’s guidance for indoor colonies nesting in voids is that they can be controlled with baits, with barrier treatment restricting foragers entering from outside through cracks, crevices, and screens. That is two coordinated jobs rather than one.
Sequence is where DIY attempts most often go wrong even when the products are reasonable. Spraying a repellent across an area where bait is placed pushes foragers away from the one thing positioned to reach the queens, so the bait sits untouched while the trail reroutes. Patience is part of it too. A baiting program works through the foraging population over time rather than emptying a counter overnight. What to watch for is the trail thinning and the routes shrinking over successive weeks.
Where a Wall Void Has to Be Reached Directly
Where a wall void has to be reached directly, the wall is the obstacle rather than the ants. A void nest that keeps resupplying trails despite good bait placement and a maintained exterior sometimes needs treatment delivered into the void itself, and in-wall pest tubing is a system built into the walls for exactly that, which suits a species UF places in voids as a matter of routine.
The Visit, From Kitchen to Fence Line
Identification comes first, then a two sided treatment, because everything above depends on knowing which of the three species is doing what.
The interior inspection follows the trails to where they enter, which means reading the routes at cabinet bases, baseboards, plumbing penetrations under sinks, the dishwasher surround, and window and door frames, and looking at the moisture conditions in each room the trails serve. Potted plants get looked at rather than walked past.
The exterior inspection covers the ground the outdoor nesting list describes: the mulch layer and the beds against the house, the palms and their frond bases, tree bark that has begun to loosen, irrigated turf and its thatch, and any vegetation touching the walls, since a shrub against a house is a bridge that skips the perimeter entirely. The lawn gets read separately for mounds and for the soil pile signature, because those are different jobs on the same invoice.
Then treatment: bait matched to the species and placed on the actual foraging routes, an exterior barrier at the points foragers use to come in, and the interior kept narrow rather than blanket. Most properties here hold on a quarterly rhythm once the initial colony work is done, with a tighter interval where pressure warrants it.

That pattern is close to a signature for ghost ants, and it is not a sign the product failed at what it did. Are these the same ants as the mounds in our lawn?
No, and the two need completely different work. The mounds in a Valrico lawn are fire ants, an outdoor turf problem treated at the mound and across the yard. The pale ants trailing along your counter are almost certainly ghost ants, which UF describes as extremely small at 1.3 to 1.5 millimeters, with a dark head and thorax and a whitish gaster and legs. A household can genuinely have both at once on the same property, and treating one does nothing for the other, so the identification comes before the plan rather than after.
What are the little piles of soil at the edge of our patio, then?
