Why does killing a Brandon mound not kill the colony?

A fire ant mound is the visible office of an operation that mostly works elsewhere. Workers forage more than a hundred feet from the nest, so the ants crossing your patio may commute from a colony two lawns over, and the queen sits in chambers deep below the surface, insulated from anything poured on top. She can lay up to 1,500 eggs a day and keep producing for years, replacing every worker a drench kills within days. Attacking a mound with a shovel or a garden hose does even worse, scattering the colony and sometimes splitting it into two. Treating mounds one at a time is bookkeeping. It counts the problem without changing it.

Why do fresh mounds appear across a Brandon lawn after a storm?

Rain moves fire ants twice over, and the two effects are worth separating because they call for different responses. Broadcast is what reaches the colonies you do not know about, including young ones that have not built a visible mound yet. Several days later, any mound still showing activity gets treated directly and at depth.

Why the order cannot be reversed

The sequence is not a preference, and reversing it is the most common way a well intentioned yard treatment fails. Mound treatment first announces the threat, and a colony that survives a direct hit relocates or splits, which leaves the broadcast round working against a population that has already scattered. Bait depends entirely on workers behaving normally, foraging and carrying material inward on their own schedule, and normal behavior is the first thing a disturbed colony stops doing.

The gap between the two steps carries the rest of the logic. Bait needs days to move through a colony, and waiting sorts the yard for you: the mounds still showing activity a week later are the ones that still need direct treatment, and the ones that have gone quiet do not need to be touched at all.

Reading which yard gets which treatment

Timing carries real weight in both steps, because bait put down before rain or at the wrong hour is wasted, which is much of why store versions of the same idea disappoint. There is also a threshold judgment in front of the whole method. UF puts broadcast baiting in play at roughly twenty mounds per acre, and below that a yard is often better served by treating mounds individually than by dosing the whole lot. One caution from the same research points the same direction: in yards with healthy native ant populations, broadcast baiting can backfire by removing the competitors that slow fire ants down, so some Brandon yards do better with mound treatment alone. What does a fire ant sting actually do to a person?

The medical side of a fire ant sting is worth understanding plainly, because it explains why fire ants get treated differently from any other ant in a Florida yard. The venom produces immediate burning, and within a day or so the site raises a white fluid filled pustule that itches intensely and can keep itching for up to ten days. Roughly one person in five develops a large local reaction beyond the sting site. Between half a percent and two percent have a systemic allergic reaction, and in someone already sensitized, a single sting can trigger anaphylaxis. Deaths are rare but documented across the southern states, Florida included.

The warning signs that mean stop and get help are chest pain, nausea, trouble breathing, swelling that spreads well beyond the stings, dizziness, or slurred speech. A household with a known allergy should keep an epinephrine injector accessible and should treat mounds as a standing hazard rather than a seasonal annoyance. The people most at risk are the ones least able to move quickly away from a disturbed mound: small children, older adults, anyone with limited mobility, and pets, which tend to get stung on the paws and muzzle because they investigate with their faces.

Do gasoline, grits, or a garden hose kill a fire ant mound?

Most Brandon yards have tried one of those home remedies before they call, so it is worth saying which home methods do not work and why. Pouring gasoline on a mound is dangerous, illegal in many places, ineffective at reaching the queen, and it contaminates soil and groundwater. Club soda does nothing. The most expensive mistake is subtler than any of those. It is deciding to treat only the mounds you can see. Visible mounds are a fraction of the activity in a colonized yard, young colonies often have not built anything obvious, and the workers foraging on your patio may belong to a colony on another lot entirely. Treating visible mounds is reactive by definition. Broadcast bait is the part that gets ahead of the problem.

Where the Risk Concentrates

In country as thoroughly colonized as this, roughly a third of people are stung in a given year, and a sting is rarely singular, since a disturbed mound answers with dozens of workers at once. The spots that deserve the closest watch are the ones where surprise is likeliest: swing sets and play areas, pool decks, patio edges, the strips where pets run. The risk map is not the mound map

What makes the risk map worth drawing is that it is not the same as the mound map. Add the fact that only a fraction of the colony is out foraging at any moment, and a lawn can look calm on a Saturday morning and still hold most of a population. The Cadence That Holds

Fire ants run hard here from March through November and slow only briefly in the coldest weeks. Reapplication every three to four months keeps bait pressure on colonies before they mature, heavy rain between visits earns a follow up look, and our quarterly plans carry fire ant treatment as standard rather than as an extra.

What sets the three to four month interval

The interval is set by how fast a young colony becomes a treatable one rather than by how long any product lasts. A queen that came down on a mating flight in April is building through the warm months, and a colony a season old is already a colony worth reaching, while the same colony left alone through a second summer is the version that takes real work. Baiting on a three to four month rhythm means you keep meeting colonies on the early side of that curve. Several things decide whether an application works, and most of them are timing rather than product. Bait has to go down when workers are actually foraging, which varies with the hour and the weather, and bait broadcast just before rain is largely wasted. Mound treatments need enough volume to reach the full depth of the mound, applied at a time of day when the queen and brood are in chambers the treatment can reach, or the result is a scattered colony instead of a dead one. What to Watch for Between Visits

The homeowner half of this is short and it works. Mow regularly, because tall grass hides mounds until someone finds one the hard way. Avoid overwatering, since saturated soil is preferred nesting ground. Keep mulch to a couple of inches and pulled back from the foundation. Then walk the property after any significant rain and note what is new, paying particular attention to the sidewalk edges, the play equipment, the pool deck, the pet run, and the garden beds where someone kneels.

Several new mounds appearing at once after a single rain usually means colony expansion rather than a few strays, and that is the signal to treat the population again rather than spot treating what surfaced. When the walk turns up wings instead of mounds

One thing that walk turns up in spring and fall is winged insects rather than mounds, and that finding gets sorted before anything else happens. Winged fire ants coming off a lawn mean a colony on or near the property matured enough to send reproductives, which is useful and points straight at broadcast baiting.
