Most ant pages treat a building as the destination and the yard as the origin, then spend their length on how a forager gets from one to the other. Port Richey inverts that. Here the consequential event is a whole colony giving up on the ground and relocating, and the only question the city itself decides is how far it travels before it finds somewhere to relocate to. As the main Port Richey page sets out, this is a town of roughly three thousand people on barely more than two square miles at the mouth of the Cotee River, and that combination is the whole argument for ant control on these blocks.

Saturated Soil Is an Eviction Notice

The mechanism is not a Florida folk belief and it does not need dressing up. UF/IFAS states it directly: after a heavy rain the colony may move to higher ground or inside homes to take refuge from saturated soil. Elsewhere the same institution records that entire colonies occasionally nest in wall voids or rafters, or behind large appliances, sometimes moving into buildings during floods or drought.

Sit with what that describes. Not foragers wandering in after crumbs. The functioning colony, with its queens and brood, abandoning the soil it was living in and occupying part of a structure instead. UF/IFAS puts a mature colony at as many as 240,000 workers, with a typical one around 80,000, which gives the sentence its weight. The thing relocating is not small.

Water does the evicting. A nest in the ground depends on chambers that hold air, and saturation removes that. There is no decision point where the colony weighs its options. The ground stops working, and the colony leaves for whatever is higher and drier than the ground.

What counts as higher and drier on this ground

The answer is unromantic, and it is the reason this page exists.

A colony pushed out of saturated soil is not surveying the neighborhood. It moves in whatever direction the ground improves, and the first elevated, dry, stable thing it encounters is where it stops. A raised slab edge qualifies. A block wall with a settled seam at its base qualifies. So do the dry sand under a stoop, the space behind a garage threshold, the void where a utility line passes through a wall, a stack of pavers, and the dry side of a seawall cap.

None of that is a preference for buildings. It is a preference for dry, and in a place where the ground is going under, buildings are simply what dry is made of.

Two Square Miles Compresses Every Distance

Now put that behavior on this specific grid, because that is where Port Richey stops resembling anywhere else in Pasco.

The city is small in a way that is easy to state and hard to picture. Roughly two square miles along a river mouth, cut through with canals and developed close to the water because the water is why anybody built here. Harbor Isles, Sand Pebble Pointe, Marina Palms, the Keys at Cotee River, and Miller’s Bayou are names for one fact: housing packed tight against water on a small footprint.

That footprint sets the length of the walk. Somewhere inland with acreage between structures, a colony leaving saturated ground travels through more saturated ground, then through pasture or scrub, and a large share of those colonies never reach a building at all. The behavior fires and nothing comes of it.

Here the geometry differs in one variable only. The nearest dry elevated thing is close. A colony leaving the soil at the back of a canal lot has a seawall, a pool deck, a slab, and a block wall inside a very short distance, with the neighbor’s versions of all four just past the fence. Proximity is not a second mechanism. It is a multiplier on the one mechanism, set higher here than anywhere else we work.

Why the same storm reads differently street to street

What varies between two addresses on the same storm is not how much water fell. It is how much soil around each went under, and how much dry structure sat within reach of it. A lot with a broad dry yard and a single slab in the middle gives an evicted colony room to fail. A lot where the structure, the deck, the shed pad, and the seawall occupy most of the ground gives it several destinations before it has gone anywhere. Same storm, same species, different amount of building per square foot of saturated ground.

The River Mouth Saturates From More Than One Direction

The Cotee finishes here, and where a river finishes it does something to soil that rain alone does not.

An ordinary inland saturation event has one source. Rain falls, the ground takes what it can, and the rest sits until it drains or evaporates. A single clock, running down.

At a river mouth the soil can be loaded from above and from the side at once. Rainfall works down through the profile while the river runs high with what it collected upstream, and a surge event pushes water in from the Gulf against the outflow rather than with it. Groundwater near tidal water also sits closer to the surface as a standing condition, so the soil on these blocks starts a storm with less capacity in it than soil twenty minutes east. Saturation therefore arrives sooner in the storm and clears later after it, and the eviction window runs longer on both ends than the weather report suggests. The Arrival Does Not Look Like an Ant Problem

A relocated colony presents differently from a foraging trail, and mistaking the second for the first sends a household looking in the wrong place.

A foraging problem is a line. It has a direction, a source outside, and a destination on a counter, and following it backward gets you to something. It appears gradually and it appears where food is.

A relocation presents as volume without a line. Numbers turn up in a garage, a utility closet, a laundry corner, or along an exterior wall baseboard, with no trail running out to the yard because nothing is commuting from the yard anymore. Some part of the colony is in the building. Households read that as a sudden severe infestation, which is reasonable and slightly wrong. What happened is that a population in your soil for two seasons moved forty feet sideways.

The other tell is which rooms report it. Foraging goes where sugar and water are, so kitchens and bathrooms lead. Relocation goes where the structure met the wet ground, so the garage slab edge, the utility room’s exterior wall, and the addition seam lead instead.

Where to look after water instead of where you looked before

The walk changes accordingly, and it is short.

Follow the foundation line rather than the lawn. Look at the base of the block on every elevation, particularly the wall closest to the canal or the lowest corner of the lot. Read the slab edge where a patio, a lanai, or a driveway abuts the house, since that joint is a dry seam beside wet ground running the length of the building.

Then the things sitting on the ground that are not the ground: pavers, stacked material against a wall, the shed pad, the hot tub surround, the planter boxes, and anything with a base that stayed above the water. Each is a dry island, and a dry island in a saturated yard is where an evicted colony reorganizes before it goes anywhere else.

Fire Ants Are Not the Only Species Reading the Water

The eviction behavior is best documented for fire ants and the water does not restrict itself to one species, which matters for what gets treated.

The smaller species already nesting in voids, under slabs, and in the sand beside a foundation answer the same saturation by shifting deeper into what they were using, which produces a quieter version of the same week: a bathroom trail that was not there in June and does not go away in August. Identification therefore comes before any product, because the two look similar from a hallway and take different baits in different placements.

Reaching a Colony You Cannot See

Once part of a colony is inside a structure, the method is decided by the fact that nobody can get to it.

Bait works here for a structural reason rather than a chemical one. Foraging workers carry it back along the routes they are already using, into a space behind a wall or under a slab no application can be aimed at, and the material moves through the colony by the colony’s own distribution. UF/IFAS describes bait as being collected by foragers and shared with other members of the colony, which is precisely the property this situation needs.

Anything sprayed across the visible portion is aimed at the fraction that happens to be in the open, and that fraction is cheap for a colony to lose. Worse, repellent product laid over the routes scatters the traffic that would otherwise carry bait home, so the one approach capable of reaching the nest gets cut off by the one that felt decisive.

Exclusion is the third step rather than the first. Once the population is worked down, closing the foundation seams, the utility penetrations, the slab joint, and the garage threshold raises the cost of a rebuild next time the ground goes under. On housing settling beside brackish water for decades there is usually a list, and it pays back against far more than ants.

The Calendar Here Is a Storm Calendar

Ant pressure in Tampa Bay runs every month of the year, and that general truth is not what a Port Richey plan is built around.

The resident population on a lot behaves ordinarily and responds to an ordinary rhythm. Colonies forage through the winter because there is no freeze to stop them, bait reaches a queen in February as readily as in July, and a standing quarterly interval covers most properties on these streets well.

What a schedule cannot cover is the eviction event, because it is triggered rather than scheduled. It happens the week the ground goes under, whenever that falls, and a property can run three quiet years and then take two loaded weeks in one season. The correct response to water coming up is a look at the foundation line rather than a wait for the next visit on the calendar. Sorting a Waterfront Lot Into Its Two Jobs

A visit here establishes which of the two situations is running before anything gets placed, because treating one as the other wastes the visit.

The exterior read follows the ground first: which parts of the lot hold water and for how long, where the yard sits relative to the canal or the seawall, where the dry islands are, and what the foundation line looks like on the low side. Mounds in open sunny turf get read as turf. The base of the block, the slab joint, and the utility penetrations get read as structure, on every elevation rather than the one facing the street.

The interior read goes to the rooms the mechanism predicts rather than the rooms food predicts: the garage, the utility and laundry corners, the exterior wall baseboards, and behind large appliances, along with the sinks and vanities for the smaller species. Trails get followed to where they come through rather than wiped, since the entry point is the information.

Then placement: bait matched to the species and set on routes already in use, exterior work where the arrivals are coming from, and interior work kept narrow. Most properties settle onto a quarterly rhythm once the colony work is done, with a tighter interval while an established population is reduced and an unscheduled look after any week the water came up.

Ants appeared in the garage the same week the water came up. Is that a coincidence?

Almost certainly not. UF/IFAS states plainly that after a heavy rain a colony may move to higher ground or inside homes to take refuge from saturated soil, and it records entire colonies occasionally nesting in wall voids, rafters, or behind large appliances, sometimes moving into buildings during floods or drought. Read as a sentence about biology that is interesting. Read against a lot two feet above a tidal river it is a forecast. Why would the same rain do this here but not at my daughter's place inland?

Distance, mostly. A colony forced out of the ground does not choose a target so much as it takes the first dry elevated thing it reaches, and how far that is depends on how much is built around it. Inland, a colony leaving a saturated pasture edge has a long walk before anything with a slab comes into range, and most of those colonies never arrive anywhere. On this grid the walk is short in every direction. The behavior is identical in both places. The result differs because of what happens to be standing nearby.

How long after the water goes down does this window stay open?

Longer than the wet ground stays visible, which is what catches people out. Soil holds water well after the surface looks dry, and a colony that has moved into a wall or under a slab edge has no reason to walk back out just because the yard firmed up. It found a dry, stable, undisturbed space and it will stay there while that remains true. So the useful check is not the week of the water. It is the two or three weeks afterward, when a household has stopped associating anything with the storm.

Can we keep them out by sealing the bottom of the walls before storm season?

Sealing is worth doing and it is the wrong thing to lead with. A colony arriving at a wall is looking for any gap along a foundation line that has been settling beside brackish water for decades, and closing the three openings you can see leaves the ones behind the utility penetration, under the slab edge, and where the addition meets the original. Reaching the colony with bait its own workers carry down comes first. Sealing afterward makes the same arrangement harder to rebuild next season, which is real value in the second position and disappointing in the first.

Do the canal front lots get this differently than the rest of the city?

They get it sooner and they get it from more directions. A canal lot has water on a side that an interior lot does not, so the soil behind it saturates from the yard and from the bank at the same time, and there is often no dry ground at all between the colony and the seawall. Interior blocks off US 19 still get it, they just get it later in the sequence and usually from one direction. Both are the same job. The canal lots simply have less margin in them.
