Two insects build on the same 2006 soffit in Riverview, and telling them apart is worth more to you than anything else on this page. The main Riverview page gives the reason there are so many of those soffits: seven of every ten homes here went up after 2000, the median home dates to about 2006, and roughly two percent of the housing stock predates 1970. That makes this the youngest large community we service, tens of thousands of young eaves offering the identical overhead surface, and UF documents the mud dauber nesting on exactly those eaves. The paper wasp takes the same real estate. From the driveway the two situations look about the same. They are not remotely the same. Wasp and hornet work on a house this young starts with naming the builder, and most of the time it also ends there.

One Is a Colony, the Other Is One Insect

Start with the structural difference, because everything a homeowner should do follows from it rather than from how alarming the nest looks.

A paper wasp comb is a society, and its most important property is that the number on it goes up. A mated queen starts alone in spring with a disc roughly golf ball scale and no workforce. Workers emerge, and from then on the comb carries a population that climbs all season, reaching dinner plate width with dozens of defenders on it by August. What follows from that arithmetic is the defense. Paper wasps ignore a person out in the yard, but the comb itself is property they hold collectively, and disturbing it draws a coordinated response instead of a single insect.

A mud dauber is not that. She is a solitary wasp, and solitary is a structural fact rather than a description of her mood. There is one female and no workforce, ever. She builds her tubes, provisions the cells, seals them, and the operation is finished. Nothing stands guard, because a lone insect defending a sealed cell gains nothing by it and loses her own trip. Mud daubers almost never sting anybody, and that follows from the arrangement rather than from luck holding.

Which means the thing people reach for, a can and a plan to eliminate the colony, has a target in one case and no target at all in the other. You cannot eliminate a colony that was never assembled.

How do you tell a mud nest from a paper comb from the driveway?

Mud or paper is the whole test, and the distinction anybody actually has to make is not entomology. It is materials.

Look at what the nest is built out of. A mud dauber nest is mud. It reads as smooth gray brown tubes stuck flat against the surface, laid side by side like somebody piped them on with a bag, and it has no opening you can see into and no cells visible from below. It sits directly on the wall, the soffit, the garage ceiling, or the lanai ceiling, with nothing hanging.

A paper wasp comb is paper, and it hangs. Gray, open underneath, umbrella shaped, with hexagonal cells you can see straight up into from the ground because the whole comb is oriented downward. That visible cell structure is the tell, and it is the reason a comb is easier to identify than the insect on it. You do not need to see the wasp. You need to see whether there are cells looking back at you.

Mud stuck flat. Paper hanging open. That is the entire test, it takes about two seconds from the driveway, and on a Riverview soffit it happens in good light against a light colored surface, which is about as favorable as identification conditions get.

The Same Reaction Aimed at Two Different Problems

Here is where the split earns its keep, because the reaction people have to both is identical and it is the wrong size in both directions.

The mud dauber gets overtreated. Something built a nest on the house, so it gets sprayed, or somebody calls to have it treated, or in the worse version a household spends a season worrying about the eave over the back door. Every bit of that is aimed at an insect with nothing to eliminate, almost no sting risk attached, and a diet of spiders, including one species here that goes after widows in particular. Sit with the diet for a moment on a young Riverview lot. The spider population around a new landscape is not zero, and the tubes under your eave are evidence that something has been working on it for free. Treating mud daubers is not a close judgment call. There is no product to sell you, and a photo showing tubes gets that answer from us rather than an estimate.

The paper wasp is the one that punishes waiting, and the arithmetic is what makes that true rather than anything about how a household feels about its house. A comb does the one thing paper wasp combs do, which is grow a workforce. Every week of watching to see whether it repeats is a week the colony spends adding the workers that will defend it. The cheapest moment to have dealt with it was already behind you: the week it was a golf ball sized disc with a single occupant and nothing on it capable of defending anything.

So the two errors run opposite. Effort spent on the harmless one, patience spent on the one that compounds. Getting the identification right in two seconds fixes both at once.

Why is there so much mud under a 2006 soffit?

A soffit that young has not had many reasons for anybody to look at it, and the age of the housing here does one more thing, and it works on the mud dauber side specifically.

A 2006 soffit has not been repainted many times. It has not been pressure washed many times. On a lot of these houses the answer is once or none. That matters because mud tubes are a physical deposit rather than a living colony, and deposits accumulate wherever nobody has a maintenance reason to go. A tube left from three seasons ago is still up there looking exactly like a tube from this spring, since there is no colony to die off and nothing to abandon a nest in any visible way. On an older Tampa Bay house, thirty years of ladders, paint crews, gutter work, and pressure washing have knocked that inventory down repeatedly whether or not anybody was thinking about wasps. A young house has not had that accidental housekeeping yet.

Which produces a common Riverview situation. A homeowner finally gets up under the eave for some unrelated reason, a light fixture or a soffit repair, and finds more mud up there than they expected. It is not evidence of an infestation and it is not evidence that anything went wrong. It is a decade of one solitary insect at a time using an unweathered surface nobody had cause to visit.

The other half of the young stock argument runs the opposite way and belongs to the paper wasp. When a whole subdivision goes up in the same eighteen months, every house on the street offers the same overhead surface at the same height with the same roofline geometry. That is why what one neighbor finds on their back elevation is worth a look on yours. The queens are choosing among identical options, so the choices repeat down the block in a way they do not in a neighborhood assembled over forty years.

When is a nest a chore and when is it a phone call?

Once you know which one you have, the response sorts itself into three short answers, and only one of them involves us.

Mud tubes within reach. Scrape them off with a putty knife. That is the whole procedure. There is no colony to provoke, no timing that makes it safer, and no product involved. The only thing worth checking first is your footing, because if the eave needs an extension ladder, the ladder has become the hazard and the tubes have not. Nobody gets hurt by a mud tube. People do get hurt coming down ladders, and a nest that requires one is fair to leave for somebody who is going up there anyway.

Mud tubes you would rather leave. Also fine. This is the leave it alone case, and it is a legitimate answer rather than neglect. A sealed mud tube on a lanai ceiling is doing nothing to your household, and the insect that built it is working through the spider population on your lot.

An open paper comb. Different answer entirely. An active nest gets left alone instead of tested, and the identification argument is exactly why. Every version of testing a comb, a shot of product to see who emerges, a poke, a knock to dislodge it, exists to answer a question the cells already answered for you from the driveway. You looked at the material. You know. There is nothing left to establish, and the only thing testing adds is a provoked colony. The narrow exception is the early one: a small spring disc with a handful of wasps and no workforce, reachable flat footed, in a household where nobody reacts badly to stings, handled at dusk with open ground behind you. Past that size or past that reach, it belongs to us.

The concealed nest that defeats the test

There is a third thing you can find, and it defeats the two second test rather than fitting into it. If the nest is neither mud on the surface nor paper hanging off it, and what you are watching is insects passing in and out of a seam, a joint, or an opening in the ground, then the structure is hidden and the materials test has nothing to work with. Concealed is its own category on any house, and it is worth naming here because a young roofline still has joints. Do not spray into the opening and do not close it up. Both moves are attempts to finish a job from outside a nest you cannot see, and both tend to send the occupants somewhere less convenient. Mark it, keep the mower and the household off that patch if it is in the turf, and hand it over. An Inspection That Sorts Before It Treats

On a property where the two likeliest finds ask for opposite handling, the first visit is mainly a naming exercise, and that is what makes it worth an hour.

A technician goes around the exterior reading every covered surface the builder handed over, then sorts what is on them into three piles rather than one. Mud gets named as mud and left or scraped, and nothing about it turns into a line item. Paper gets treated as a colony, taken down rather than dosed and abandoned above a doorway, with the protective equipment and the time of day the job actually calls for. Anything concealed behind a joint or under the turf gets its own handling, because it is the one category where guessing costs you.

That sorting is why the visit is worth more here than a surface count would suggest. A homeowner who has watched somebody name three nests on their own house in ten minutes can do the test themselves forever after, which is the point of a page built on identification. What we hand over at the end is short by design. On these elevations it usually comes down to a particular stretch of soffit or a particular return that keeps drawing combs season after season, so your own check next spring aims at two or three named spots instead of sweeping a blank wall. There is a nest under our soffit and I cannot tell which one I have. How do I know?

Look at what the nest is made of, not at the insect. Mud daubers build tubes of mud, smooth and gray brown, stuck flat against the surface like somebody piped them on. Paper wasps build a comb of gray paper hanging from a short stalk, open underneath, with hexagonal cells you can see from below. That single difference decides everything else. Mud means one solitary wasp that almost never stings, and a putty knife settles it. Paper cells mean a colony that defends what it built, and a colony gets left alone and handed off.

Should I pay to have mud daubers treated?

No. Send a photo and if it shows tubes, that is the answer you will get from us. A mud dauber works solitary, so there is no colony standing behind the nest to eliminate, and she almost never stings anybody. She also hunts spiders for a living, and one species we have locally goes after widows in particular. If the tubes look bad against a light colored soffit, scrape them. A treatment aimed at them changes nothing, which is a poor thing to charge for.

Our house is only a few years old. Why is anything nesting on it already?

Because a wasp reads a soffit as a flat covered ceiling, and a soffit installed last year is a better version of that than one that has weathered for thirty. New paint is not a deterrent. It is a fresh surface.

Can I knock down mud tubes myself if they are up under the eave?

The tubes themselves are the easy part, since there is no colony to provoke. The part worth thinking about is the ladder. If you can reach the tubes standing on the ground or from a step stool with both feet planted, a putty knife handles it. If the eave needs an extension ladder, the ladder is now the hazard rather than the wasp, and that is a fair reason to leave the tubes for someone who is already going up there. The tube is not what would hurt you. The ladder is.

The nest is mud, but we still see wasps around it. Should that change our answer?

Usually not. A female mud dauber works alone, and seeing her come and go while she provisions and seals her cells is the normal picture rather than a warning sign. What would change the answer is finding open paper cells nearby, since a mud tube and a comb can share the same run of soffit without either one being related to the other. Check the rest of the eave before you decide the whole elevation is settled.
