Hudson households learn to read the wind before they read the forecast. As the main Hudson page puts it, the black salt marsh mosquito emerges from the marsh in numbers and rides wind for miles, and the marsh is Hudson’s western neighbor. That single fact reorganizes what mosquito control means on this coast. Everywhere else in Tampa Bay, the question is where the water on the property is. Here the water that matters is a mile or more west of the property, on land nobody in town owns, and the variable that decides tonight is which direction the air is moving.
Why does the wind decide a Hudson evening more than the yard does?
Because the mosquito doing most of the biting was not produced anywhere on your street. It came out of tidal marsh soil west of town, in a batch, and it had to cross ground to reach you.
A container breeder hatched in a plant saucer beside your back door has already arrived. There is no travel step, no delivery mechanism, and no weather variable between the larva and the bite. The number in the yard tonight is a function of what is holding water in the yard.
The marsh species runs the opposite arithmetic. Its production site is fixed and remote, and everything between emergence and biting is transport. That transport is not powered by the mosquito alone. This is a strong flier by mosquito standards, covering ground under its own effort that a container species never attempts, and it becomes considerably stronger with air behind it. Adults lifted into moving air travel far past the range they would manage in still conditions.
So the count on a Hudson lot has two inputs that a normal yard assessment never separates: how much the marsh released recently, and whether the air has been carrying that release inland or holding it offshore. Both can change while your property stays exactly the same.
The direction that matters on this coast
The geography does the explaining. The marsh is west of the neighborhoods, between them and the Gulf. Air moving in off the water crosses the marsh on its way to the houses. Air moving the other way crosses the houses on its way to the marsh.
An onshore breeze after a productive marsh week is the setup residents remember. The same neighborhood under a steady offshore flow can be pleasant on the same date, at the same temperature, with the same standing water on the same lots. Between those two evenings nothing on the ground changed. The air turned.
This is also why comparing notes with a neighbor two streets over tells you less than you would think. Two lots with different tree lines and different exposure receive different quantities of the same arriving population.
A flood now, a bad week later
A marsh flood loads the delivery system, and the loading is the part nobody sees. The biting that follows is the unloading.
This species does not lay eggs on water. It lays them on damp marsh soil above the normal waterline, and those eggs hold there without developing until something covers the ground. A high tide pushing up into the marsh does it. A soaking rain on flat coastal ground does it. A storm arriving on top of an already elevated tide does it thoroughly, because the two sources of water are working the same direction at once.
When the flooding happens, the eggs sitting in that soil hatch close to together. The larvae develop together, and the adults emerge as a wave rather than a trickle. That wave is what the wind then has to work with.
So a Hudson household experiences a sequence with a gap in the middle. Water rises in a place you cannot see. Several quiet days pass, during which the yard looks entirely ordinary. Then an onshore evening arrives and the porch is unusable. By the time the biting starts, the flooding is old news and nothing about the property offers an explanation, which is why people go looking for a source on their own lot and do not find one.
Reading your own bad week backward
When an unpleasant stretch begins, look back several days for a flooding tide or a heavy rain, then check whether the breeze has turned onshore. Hindsight is the better instrument here, since forecasting the marsh is not a household job. If both are behind you, the stretch has a cause and a limit, because a synchronized brood is finite. It emerged together and it thins together rather than restocking indefinitely.
If a stretch of biting has no marsh event behind it and simply grinds along at a low steady level, that pattern points at the other half of the problem, which is water sitting inside your own fence. The two halves behave differently enough that the pattern itself is diagnostic, and it costs nothing to notice.
Your half of the problem
A household owns the landing site, not the source, and getting that division straight is what separates useful effort from frustration.
Nothing done on a Hudson lot changes the marsh. It should not. That marsh is the reason this coast looks the way it does, it is protected habitat, and the state and county manage it at a scale no homeowner operates at. Treating the source is not on the table for a private property owner, and any company suggesting otherwise is selling something that does not exist.
What is on the table is everything that happens after arrival. A mosquito that rides a west breeze into your yard at dusk is not flying all night. It needs somewhere humid and shaded to spend the daylight hours, and that requirement is far more specific than most people assume. Adults press into cover: the interior of a thick hedge, the shaded strip along a canal bank, the underside of a deck, dense ground cover against a north wall, the vegetation growing at the base of a seawall. Open sunny lawn does nothing for them.
That cover is inside your property line. Treated, it stops functioning as a day roost, and a substantial share of the arrivals move on rather than staying to bite you tomorrow evening and the one after. Untreated, your lot is a hotel for whatever the wind delivered.
The container half belongs to you as well, and it is the more responsive of the two. The thresholds involved are lower than most people expect. A film of standing water in something the size of a bottle cap can carry a brood, and in a Florida summer the run from egg to biting adult takes about a week. That means a container you emptied a month ago has had time to produce several generations. On a Hudson lot the usual suspects are the boat cover holding a sag of rainwater, the tarp over a trailer, a clogged gutter section, plant saucers, a birdbath nobody refreshes, and the cups formed by bromeliad leaves. None of those produce salt marsh mosquitoes. They produce a completely different set of species, including the daytime biters, and that set answers entirely to a walk around the yard.
The canal grid and the inland grid
The two grids share the same arriving population, but their resting cover and their container inventories differ enough that the work has to differ too.
A canal address in Sea Pines or Signal Cove has the vegetated bank, the seawall line, and the boat as its defining features. The bank vegetation along a canal is shaded, humid, and permanent, which makes it the highest value resting habitat on the property by a wide margin. The boat and its cover are the container problem, and a cover that holds a pocket of rainwater between uses is one of the most productive breeding sites we find on this coast. The screens on the porch matter more here too, because the porch is where people actually want to sit.
An inland Hudson lot in Beacon Woods or Heritage Pines has a different profile. Mature landscaping, irrigated foundation beds, and screened lanais built decades apart. The resting cover is in the beds and hedges rather than at a waterline, and the container inventory tilts toward gutters, saucers, and low corners of turf that stay soft after a storm. Older lanai screening is its own item on an inland lot, since a screen enclosure that has been up since the 1970s has usually developed the small gaps that make it decorative rather than functional.
Both lots receive the same wind. What differs is how much of that delivery each one retains, and the inspection is built around finding out.
When is Hudson worst, and does it ever fully stop?
The worst stretch runs from late spring through the fall storm season, when the wet season and the tides overlap, and no month of the year turns the machine fully off.
Warm months compress the development time between a marsh flood and a biting adult, so summer floods convert into biting faster than winter ones. Summer is also when the wet season delivers the freshwater half of the inundation and when named storms deliver both halves at once. A tropical system on this coast pushes water up into the marsh and drops rain on it simultaneously, and the weeks after that combination are the ones residents talk about.
The dry season slows the whole machine without switching it off. Cooler weather stretches development, fewer flooding events reach the egg reserve in the soil, and the container half of the problem drops off with the rain. Hudson does not get a hard freeze that resets anything, so a warm January week with an onshore breeze still produces biting evenings. Treatment on this coast is a year round proposition running at different intensities rather than a summer service.
Storm season deserves its own note because Hudson has taken real water in recent years. The first walk of the property
Before anything is treated, we work out how much of the problem is arriving and how much is being manufactured on site, because the answer changes what gets treated and how often.
We walk the property looking at two things in sequence. First the resting cover: which vegetation on this lot is shaded and humid enough to hold adults through a Florida afternoon, where the tree line sits relative to a west wind, whether a canal bank or seawall is part of the equation, and how the porch or lanai is positioned relative to all of it. Then the containers, which on this coast means the boat and its cover, the trailer, the gutters, the saucers, the low corner of the yard that stays soft for days, and anything stored outside since the last storm.
Treatment goes onto the resting cover rather than into the air, because the object is to make the landing sites stop working. Where standing water on the property cannot be poured out, a low corner that will not drain or a decorative feature you want to keep, larvicide handles the water instead of an argument about removing it. Screens get looked at, since a porch with intact screening is the one part of a Hudson property that can be genuinely mosquito free.

Most likely the wind did. Distance helps less than most people expect on this coast. UF documents this species dispersing well inland from the marsh that produced it, and wind extends the range considerably beyond what it would cover flying on its own, so an inland Hudson address is not out of reach. What separates one inland lot from the next is shade and humidity rather than mileage. A subdivision lot with mature landscaping and irrigated beds holds far more arriving adults through the day than an open lot half the distance from the water.
Does mowing the yard really bring them out in the afternoon?
It can, and it is one of the few things that changes your evening for reasons entirely inside your own fence. This species feeds mainly at night, but UF documents that it will bite in daylight when its resting sites are disturbed. Mowing, hedge trimming, and hauling brush all disturb exactly the cover the daytime adults are sitting in. So a Saturday of yard work on a Hudson lot can turn a quiet afternoon into a biting one without a single new mosquito arriving. Better to know that before you plan the chores than after.
Does the county already treat the marsh, and if so what is left for us to pay for?
