Most creeks drain something. A marsh, a forest, a stretch of pasture, some quantity of ground where nobody lives. McKay Creek drains Largo. As the main Largo page puts it, the McKay watershed is roughly sixty percent residential, which is the detail that decides everything about mosquito control in this city. When a creek system’s water backs up here, it does not back up in a wetland. It backs up in neighborhoods, in swales and low corners and along the streets the water came off in the first place. The standing water producing Largo’s mosquitoes is the yards’ own water, arriving back by way of the creek.
Sixty percent of the watershed is somebody’s yard
A mostly residential watershed changes where the water is when it stops moving, and that is the only thing about a drainage system a mosquito responds to.
McKay Creek runs about seven miles through southwest Largo to the Intracoastal, draining a watershed of roughly 5,500 acres, and about sixty percent of that ground is residential. Allen’s Creek does similar work on the northeast side toward Tampa Bay. Picture what that composition actually means. The contributing area is not woods and field. It is roofs, driveways, streets, parking, and lawns, with the channel threading between them.
Compare that with a rural watershed of the same size. Rain falls on ground that absorbs a good deal of it, what runs off enters the channel gradually, and when the system exceeds capacity the water spreads into floodplain nobody lives on. The mosquitoes produced in that scenario are produced away from houses and have to fly to reach anybody.
Now run the same storm here. Rain falls largely on hard surface, arrives at the channel fast and all at once, and when the system exceeds capacity there is no floodplain to take it, because the floodplain has houses on it. The water spreads laterally into the neighborhoods it just came off. What stands afterward stands in swales, side yards, low corners, and the back of lots, which is to say within a few dozen feet of where people sit outside.
The creek is infrastructure, not habitat
The delivery direction is the whole point because it inverts the mental model most households are working from.
The usual assumption about a nearby waterway is that it is a source out there sending mosquitoes in. That model is correct in plenty of places, including the salt marshes farther up this coast, where a population is produced on ground nobody owns and then travels to residential streets.
Largo runs the opposite way. The water is not sitting in a natural feature waiting to send you something. It came off your street, went into a system, and when that system could not take it, came back out into the same neighborhood. The creek in that sequence is infrastructure rather than habitat, and the breeding happens at the return end of the trip rather than at the far end.
That matters for what a household can do, because it puts a meaningful share of the productive water inside or immediately beside private property. It is not a marsh you are locked out of. It is the low corner behind your fence.
Swales, containers, and a one week timeline
The water producing mosquitoes here is the water that stands for days, not the water that runs, and telling the two apart is most of the diagnostic work.
Moving water in a channel produces very little. What produces is water that stops. On this ground that means the swale between properties that no longer drains because it has silted up or been regraded, the low corner of a lot that stays soft for the better part of a week, the depression where a downspout has been discharging for years, the ditch section that holds a pool at its lowest point, and the catch basin that is holding rather than passing.
Then the container layer sitting on top of all that, which is a different mechanism with the same result. The threshold is lower than people expect. A container holding about as much as a bottle cap can carry a brood, and in summer heat the run from egg to biting adult can take about a week. In a Largo ranch block the usual inventory is clogged gutter sections, plant saucers, a sagging grill or boat cover, a wheelbarrow left upright, and a birdbath nobody refreshes.
Two things follow from that timeline. A container emptied once a month has produced several generations between visits, so the cadence matters more than the thoroughness. And the generation started by a wet week emerges after the visible water is gone.
Fences, pools, and additions rewrote the drainage
A Largo ranch block holds water differently than a newer street, and the reason is that its drainage was designed a long time ago and has been quietly modified ever since.
Largo’s housing core is the block ranch home built through the boom decades, on lots laid out when the city went from about 1,500 residents in 1950 to more than 22,000 by 1970. Those blocks were graded and swaled to a standard, and then sixty years of individual decisions happened on top of that standard. Fences got installed across swales. Pools and decks went into back yards. Additions took up ground that used to shed. Landscaping got built up in beds. Sod got laid over depressions and settled back into them.
None of that is a defect and all of it accumulates. The result is that a mature Largo block often has a drainage pattern nobody planned, with water on its way to the street stopping at a fence post or a raised bed and sitting there instead. The manufactured home and 55 plus communities
The manufactured home and 55 plus communities are their own case here, and Largo holds one of the densest collections of them in Pinellas.
Homes sit close together on those grounds, which compresses the distance between any standing water and somebody’s door, and it means the water is often in shared ground rather than on a private lot. The space under a home is also the coolest, stillest, most humid position available in the whole community, which makes it prime daytime resting cover for adults produced anywhere nearby.
Then there is the calendar. Many residents split the year, so a lot can go months with nobody looking at the saucer under the plant by the steps or the cover sagging on the carport. Service on those grounds needs to run on the calendar rather than on who is home, and the community office usually needs to be in the loop on anything touching shared ground.
After the streets clear, the clock is still running
A storm week loads the whole system at once, and the biting arrives on a delay that catches households out every year.
Largo has taken real water in recent seasons, and the sequence is consistent. The storm exceeds what the system can move, water spreads into the neighborhoods, everything low fills, and every container in every yard fills with it. Then the streets clear and the yards drain and life resumes. The eggs and larvae that started in all of that water are still developing, several days behind the visible cleanup, and the biting shows up when the household has stopped associating it with the storm.
The productive move is to walk the property while it is still obviously wet. That is the one moment the low spots identify themselves without you having to guess where the ground falls. Mark them then, and the regrading conversation afterward is about specific locations rather than about the yard in general. The other half of a storm week is that debris becomes water storage. Palm fronds, branch piles, and stacked material hold rain in every fold, and a pile waiting on a pickup that is running behind breeds for weeks in the side yard.
Where a mosquito spends its afternoons
Once they emerge, the adults go into cover, and where that cover sits on your lot decides how much of the neighborhood’s production you personally absorb.
An adult mosquito cannot spend a Florida afternoon in open sun. It waits somewhere cool, still, and humid and comes out at the edges of the day, or for the daytime species, whenever something warm passes its cover. On a Largo lot that means the fence line planting, the shaded north side of the house, the interior of an established hedge, the space under a deck or a raised structure, and the ground cover that has matted against a wall.
That is the half of the problem sitting inside your property line regardless of where the water was. A lot that drains perfectly can still hold a large adult population, because it is offering the shelter for mosquitoes produced two doors down in a swale that does not drain at all.
Treatment is aimed there rather than into the air, because an application to open air is finished within hours while treated resting cover keeps working. Placement follows the shaded margins rather than the lawn, which is also why the open blooms pollinators use are not the target.
What a quarterly gap leaves uncovered
A Largo lot needs service on a monthly cadence through the warm months, and the watershed is the argument rather than a general preference.
Product on foliage weathers, and the interval has to be shorter than the resupply rate for a barrier to mean anything. On this ground the resupply is not tied to a distant natural cycle. It is tied to how often the drainage system exceeds capacity in a neighborhood, which in a Tampa Bay wet season is a recurring rather than an occasional event. A quarterly gap between visits leaves most of that uncovered.
The cooler months genuinely ease. Fewer storms means fewer backups, the containers dry down, and development slows in cooler weather. What does not happen here is a hard reset, because there is no sustained cold on this coast, so a warm wet stretch in a nominally dry month still produces biting. The first visit runs from the swales to the screens
Most of the time goes to working out where water stops, because that answer sets everything else.
We walk the property reading the fall of the ground: which way the lot sheds, where a fence line or a bed or a slab interrupts it, whether the swale still functions, where the downspouts discharge, and which corner is holding soft days after the last rain. Then the container lap, which on a ranch block means gutters, saucers, covers, the birdbath, the wheelbarrow, and whatever has been stored outside since the last storm. On a manufactured home lot it means the carport, the skirting line, the space underneath, and the shared ground on either side.
Then the resting cover, meaning the shaded still pockets that hold adults through the day, and the screens, since a sound enclosure is the one boundary the watershed cannot cross.
Treatment goes onto the cover and into the water that cannot be removed. You leave with a short list specific to your lot: usually a downspout to extend, a swale to clear, a low corner worth regrading before next season, and the containers that refill fastest.

We are three blocks from McKay Creek. Is the creek really our problem?
The creek is the delivery route rather than the origin, and that distinction changes what is worth doing. The McKay watershed is roughly sixty percent residential, so most of what the system carries fell on roofs, driveways, and lawns before it ever reached a channel. When the system backs up, it backs up through neighborhoods instead of across a marsh, and the water standing afterward is sitting in yards and swales rather than in a wetland a mile off. Three blocks away is not outside that, because the water is not travelling out to you. It is travelling back.
Everything drained days ago and we are still getting bitten. Why?
Because the visible water leaving is not the same event as the breeding finishing. In Florida summer heat the run from egg to biting adult can take about a week, so the generation started by a backup is emerging several days after the streets look normal again. Households read the dry pavement as the end of it and are then surprised. The useful move is to walk the property while it still looks wet, because that is when the low spots and holding containers identify themselves without you having to guess.
Our lot never floods. Does that put us out of it?
Not on its own, and lots that stay dry are the ones most likely to underestimate this. Adults fly, so a yard that shed its water perfectly still receives whatever emerged from the swale at the corner, the neighbor's low spot, and the stretch of the channel behind the block. What a dry lot avoids is manufacturing its own share. What it cannot avoid is being downstream of everyone else's, which is why the resting cover on your property matters even when the drainage on it is faultless.
Does the city or the county handle this, or is it on us?
It splits, and the split is cleaner than people assume. Pinellas County mosquito control works public land and public water, and Largo is actively rebuilding stormwater capacity in this watershed, including converting the former Pinecrest golf course site into a regional stormwater facility. Those are the right tools for a drainage system. Neither of them comes into your yard, and the water that produces the mosquitoes biting you on your own patio is often within a few dozen feet of it. The public work sets the level. The private work decides your share.
Would fixing our own drainage actually reduce bites, or just move water around?
It does real work, and on this ground it is one of the more durable things a household can spend on. A low corner that holds soft for days after every storm is a breeding site that refills on a schedule, and filling or regrading it removes the site permanently rather than treating it repeatedly. The same goes for a downspout discharging into a depression and a swale that has silted up until it no longer runs. None of that touches the creek and none of it needs to. It removes your lot from the list of places the standing water ends up.
